An Overview of Cosmetic Acupuncture
Facial rejuvenation, also known as cosmetic acupuncture, or facial acupuncture, has a
long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This treatment is a specialized skin
treatment that works to rejuvenate your skin’s appearance, and to prevent signs of
aging.
Cosmetic acupuncture is unique because unlike other cosmetic procedures, the side
effects are very limited. Generally, occasional bruising or mild discomfort are the only
consequences of facial acupuncture. While facial acupuncture results are more subtle, it
does not lead to the more harmful side effects that may be seen with cosmetic
procedures such as Botox or fillers.
During this treatment, tiny acupuncture needles are placed in key locations across the
face. This increases blood flow, and stimulates collagen and elastin production. This in
turn improves skin appearance. General health is also discussed and addressed as part
of this treatment.

Cosmetic acupuncture addresses many different signs of aging, including:
● improving skin coloration and brightness
● Minimizing fine lines
● Reducing puffiness
● Improving skin tone and elasticity
In my experience, the best results come after a series of 3-5 treatments. Further
treatments may be needed to effect further change, or to maintain results. Cosmetic
acupuncture is excellent for prevention as well. When using facial acupuncture
preventatively, it is a good idea to schedule regular appointments throughout the year.
Results vary from person to person, and I am happy to discuss with you the benefits of
cosmetic acupuncture.

Acupuncture sessions last for approximately one hour, and may be performed once or
twice a week.

Medical Facial Treatments (Botox and Fillers) vs Cosmetic Acupuncture
There are a variety of anti-aging therapies available for the treatment of the
common signs of aging. Botox and facial fillers are commonly used for this purpose.

Botox is a method of reducing wrinkles that is performed by the injection of the
botulinum toxin into facial muscles. This relaxes the muscles, and blocks their
movement by paralyzing the muscles and in turn reducing wrinkles. The original
purpose of botox was for medical conditions such as migraine, neck and jaw pain, and
others. When Botox is used in aesthetic treatments, it is usually injected around they
eyes and along the forehead, and has effects for up to 4 months. With Botox, there is
the risk of side effects. This can include paralyzed or weakened muscles, drooping
muscles, pain, headaches, eye dryness, teary eyes, bruising, swelling, or changes to
the appearance of facial expressions.

Fillers are exactly as they sound, the injection of different substances into the
face to fill in wrinkles and smooth the skin. These fillers are eventually absorbed by the
skin and the results then disappear. There are side effects that come with the use of
fillers, including changes to vision, allergic reactions, infections or itching, bruising and
pain.

In cosmetic acupuncture, no foreign substances are introduced to the body. This
is a minimally invasive procedure where tiny needles are placed throughout the face to
encourage an increase in collagen and elastic production, stimulate circulation in the

area, and promote localized healing. The side effects may include occasional mild
bruising, and possible mild discomfort at the site of the needles at the time of insertion.
Cosmetic acupuncture can be performed in conjunction with the use of Botox or fillers,
but it is best to wait for a facial acupuncture treatment until after a minimum of two
weeks has passed after previous Botox or fillers. It is also a good idea to consult with
me first before combining these treatments.
